Around the turn of the century these songs were recorded during a year of unemployment and heartbreak in Launceston, Tasmania. Both songs took over three months to complete with countless edits and rewrites on a TASCAM Portastudio. At the time I remember wanting more tracks and better equipment, but the limits shaped the sound and songs in a way now difficult to replicate with digital recording.

Among other songs, Dogs in the Driveway and Finally were originally released and given to friends on a homemade cassette called Common Purpose. Although the master tapes have since been lost, the digitised versions recall the ethos of Phil Spector’s wall of sound in the budget and scale of pocket symphonies.
